Our Lady Star of the Sea School
Celebrating Over 90 Years of Catholic Education
For more than 90 years, Our Lady Star of the Sea School has been a cherished part of the Solomons Island community, providing generations of children with a Catholic education rooted in faith, academic excellence, and service to others.
Our story begins in 1920, when Fr. Maurice Alexander became the first resident pastor of Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish. Recognizing the importance of Catholic education, Fr. Alexander established Our Lady Star of the Sea School in 1933 with the assistance of the Sisters of Divine Providence, a religious congregation based in Kentucky. The Sisters became the school's first teachers and principals, beginning a remarkable legacy of Catholic education and service in Southern Maryland.
The school's earliest classes were held in the basement of Our Lady Star of the Sea Church before eventually moving into a dedicated school building. As the school community grew, so did its facilities. In 1992, an addition provided new classrooms, the current school office, and the Providence Room, named in honor of the Sisters who helped establish our school.
For generations, the Sisters of Divine Providence were an integral part of both the school and parish communities. Their ministry extended far beyond the classroom, including service to the sick, elderly, and those in need throughout Southern Maryland. Guided by their commitment to simplicity, charity, and trust in Divine Providence, the Sisters helped shape the faith and character of countless students and families.

In June 2020, after 87 years of faithful service, the last four Sisters of Divine Providence departed Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish. A special Mass of Thanksgiving celebrated their extraordinary contributions and the lasting spiritual legacy they entrusted to our community. Though their presence has come to an end, their example of faith, service, and dedication continues to inspire our school today.
Our Lady Star of the Sea School has continued to grow and respond to the needs of young families. In 2012, the school expanded its educational offerings with the introduction of a Pre-K program. Most recently, in 2026, we celebrated another milestone with the opening of a beautiful new Pre-K building, further strengthening our commitment to early childhood education and the future of our school.
In October 2026, our school community welcomed Bishop Robert Boxie for the celebration of Mass and the blessing of our beautiful new Pre-K building, dedicated in loving memory of Deacon Chad Martin and his enduring legacy of faith, service, and charity.
Today, Our Lady Star of the Sea School proudly continues the mission begun by Fr. Alexander and the Sisters of Divine Providence in 1933. While much has changed over the decades, our commitment remains the same: to provide a nurturing Catholic education, build a community of faith and Gospel values, and prepare students to lead lives of knowledge, virtue, and service.
More than nine decades after our founding, we remain proudly centered in Jesus Christ.
